JOHANNA PALMIERI
LIKE WATER IN THE HAND
July 2 - August 2
In this poignant exhibition, Johanna Palmieri utilizes figurative realism and bold abstraction to explore memory, nostalgia, and the things that slip away in fluid oil paint. Drawing inspiration from vintage photographs and distant memories, Palmieri employs bright colors and distinct figures to capture bygone summers.
Johanna Palmieri is an artist from New York who is currently based in Oaxaca, Mexico. J. Mackey discovered her work in Marfa, Texas. She received a BA in Art History and Archaeology from the University of Indiana. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in Tunisia and Mexico, and in group exhibitions at the Institute of Material Interpretation (Marfa, TX), Olympia Gallery (New York, NY), and Wieden + Kennedy. She is quickly becoming one of our best selling artists.

ARTIST STATEMENT
“Like Water in the Hand began as a meditation on what slips away. Before everything had to be documented and shared, summers had a different quality: a table set for lunch, children running down a dune, friends lingering after a swim. These were moments that existed without an audience, and that's precisely what makes them feel so alive to me now. The paintings in this show draw from vintage photographs and half-remembered scenes, reaching for a time when presence was enough.
This body of work was born between two places, my studio in Oaxaca, Mexico and a residency in France this spring. The light and color of both lives are here, woven together into something that feels, above all, like an invitation. To slow down. To remember what it felt like to simply be somewhere, with someone, without anywhere else to be.”
