Ron Gordon

Ron Gordon, who works and lives in New York and East Hampton, has been a graphic designer, letterpress printer, teacher, and artist for most of his life. In college, he studied with the artist and fine printer Leonard Baskin and during his long career has worked with many artists—Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak, Baskin, and others. He has given workshops in graphic design and book design at Yale, Dartmouth, RIT, Wellesley, Amherst, and Wells College.

Ron studied life drawing at the Art Students League in New York. Prior to that, he studied with the legendary teacher Nicki Orbach at the National Academy of Design, the oldest art school in the United States. His guiding principle is to draw not so much what something looks like but what it feels like. When he draws with pastels or charcoal he often uses the side of the stick to chop at or strike the paper, thus, in a way, carving out the image with his tools.

Exhibitions of his graphic design have been mounted at the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gallery, the Amherst College Library, the RIT Cary Collection, and The Grolier Club. His work includes a substantial and varied body of productions for such clients as The Metropolitan Museum, The Frick Collection, The New York Public Library, and The Royal Academy of Arts. He is the co-author of Reflections of Two Craftsmen.
